The Question Man

We lovingly call my Dad "The Question Man." If he feels like he needs a little more info on a particular topic, he will ask and ask and ask until he reaches a proper understanding. We roll our eyes and giggle, but in the end, we chalk it up to part of his charm.

It's sort of an understatement that Sam has decided to follow in Pop-Pop's footsteps. And since we walk often and have lots of free time to talk, he asks lots and lots of questions.

Keith and I thought we were pretty lucky for awhile because Sam never had a "why" phase. Our friends would lament the hours they spent everyday fielding "why" questions from their 3-year olds. For example, My friend's daughter used to say, "What time is it, Mommy?" Belinda would tell her, only for her to ask, "But why is it 8:30, Mommy?" I don't have an answer to that question...it just is.

Luckily, we never walked down that road. Sam was always really concrete...there was no why...it just "was" or it "wasn't." Until now....

We have now entered the "How/How Come" phase.

So here are just two of the conversations I have had with my Son this week:

Early one morning...
- How come that man runs, Mommy? For exercise, Sam.
- How come he runs with his dog? Because dogs need exercise, too.
- But HOW is the dog running? With his feet.
- No, Mommy, HOW is the dog running? One step at a time, Sam.

Ten minutes further down the road...
- Mommy, how is that flower pink? Because God made it that way, Sam.
- No, Mommy, HOW did he make the flower pink? I have no idea, Sam.
- MOMMY! I said, HOW IS THAT FLOWER PINK?!? I don't know, Sam
- YES, YOU DO! No, I don't! Mommies and Daddies don't know everything.
- But HOW do you not know everything, Mommy? ARGH!!!!!
