SAM: Just a minute ago, I asked Sam what I could tell you about his life. He said, "tell them I need you to get up and help me find the remote." Such a "concrete" child. : ) He has less than a week of school left. I think Mom and Dad are more excited than he is. Pre-K has not been without its challenges for Sam. Academically, he is off the charts, but he really struggles sometimes to see another person's point-of-view. This can make the playground dangerous territory for Sam. Lately, we have been working ways to deal with our anger, besides hitting, of course. Also, he and his friends are crazy about superheroes. They spend most of the day acting out rescue scenarios. That said, we are also working on the difference between real and pretend "bad guys" and how to play gently. He can get a little overzealous. But the good news is, if he is ever really attacked in a dark alley, we are pretty sure he can defend himself.
STEPHEN: Potty training! Seriously, I swore I wouldn't mention it again, but let's just say the saga continues. People keep trying to tell me that no one goes to Kindergarten in Pullups, but I'm not so sure. But potty training aside, Stephen is just one little ball of progress. A few weeks ago, we got home from speech therapy and he was helping me make some cornbread to go with dinner. All of a sudden, I realized we were having a conversation. And it went on for about 5 minutes. I said something...he said something...I said something...he said something. This may not seem like a big deal to some, but it was awesome for us! : )
Stephen also has less than a week of school left. He has done really well lately, showing huge improvements in social interaction and conversation. His favorite book at school is about bird calls- it tells all about different birds and then has buttons that make bird call sounds. This bird book has led to an all out obsession with "chickadees." He looks for them and talks to them everywhere we go. Right outside my allergist's office, there are tons of birds. So everytime I get a shot, we spend a few minutes walking around looking for birds. As soon as we find some, Stephen barrels toward them, only to get sad when they fly away. We have now installed a bird feeder, full of "chickadee seed" in the backyard so our new friends can live at our house.
KEITH: He is REALLY BUSY at work! Lots of responsibility + lots of projects = VERY ready for a vacation. Luckily, we get to head out for ours next week. So that's great news for all of us. We are flying out next Friday to Georgia for my fabulous little sister, Ashleigh's high school graduation. Then the kids will stay with my parents for a week, while Keith and I go on a cruise for our 10th wedding anniversary. Since we moved to Austin, time alone together has been tough to come by. We are really excited!!
ME: What to say? I am ready for school to be out! I am ready for a break from having the kids up, dressed and out the door by 7:15. My job at Mother's Day Out is over for this year, and I am ready for another summer of long days at the pool with my guys. We had such a great time last summer and I am ready for some laidback little boy days. But only AFTER my 7 laidback days in the Caribbean with my amazing husband!
I am also looking for a job for next school year, so we will wait and see. I am both a "detail-girl" and a planner, so I keep thinking about available positions and trying to figure out logistics. If I got this job, how would we get the boys to speech therapy? Where would they go in the afternoons? Would the boys have to change schools? There are a thousand details that I can't control! But that's just the thing. I have no control over it anyway! So I am trying to let go, stop thinking about it and trust in the One who does control it.
So that's our family right now....hanging out, waiting for summer, and waiting for the next page of the story to be written...
